2. Representation and Ideology
1. - Romance because the actors used are usually selected for this sort of genre and also the instrumental and slow music that is used creates a romantic and sad setting to the film. One of the main characters dies at the very beginning, and this creates a schocking atmosphere where the audience is left wondering what else is going to happen to the one who lst her one true love. But then he shows his love for his wife by writing letters to her and helping her to finally let him go.
- That the two main characters fought a lot but still were crazy in love, shown by the actors emotion and again the music that is played in the background. Director Richard LaGravenese got the actors to look at each other which showed the sadness of them fighting but that they still had so much love for each other and it could be seen in each others eyes.
- This film follows the codes and conentions by using messy writing on its advertisement which looks like a letters writing, that shows the audience there is a background to the story. The opening scene lets us in on the fact there is going to be something important happen to this 'perfect couple' and this is going to be the reason for the film. The imagery and actor set up is a typical cliche' to the romance genre and is used most effectively in this film when Hilary Swank's character has a guy who she is friends with and someone who she feels her husband is telling her to now be with, we see the contrast between her relationships throughout the film.
